ZDF bars Danger Dan and Igor Levit from satire show over 'Keine Angst' song, then schedules 'Aspekte' special

The disinvitation

Rapper Danger Dan (Daniel Pongratz) and pianist Igor Levit were scheduled to perform the song "Keine Angst" on the 100th episode of the ZDF satire programme "Die Anstalt," set to air on 21 July 2026. Hours before the recording, the broadcaster's management intervened and cancelled the appearance. The ZDF stated that the song could be interpreted as a call to violence and self-justice, placing it in contradiction with the network's programming guidelines. A spokesperson later specified that the four first names greeted at the end of the track are identical to those of known, partly convicted left-wing extremists.

The text of the song can be understood as an instruction to political extremism that propagates vigilante justice and does not exclude unlawful acts and violence.

The song's content

"Keine Angst," released overnight on 16–17 July, is a seven-minute guide to anti-fascist resistance. Over a piano melody, Danger Dan raps about forming clandestine groups, avoiding police detection, organising anti-Nazi parties, spraying graffiti, and outing political opponents. The lyrics advise against using digital communication and urge face-to-face meetings to evade surveillance. The closing lines send "liebe Grüße" to Lina, Gucci, Maja, and Nanuk, all of whom have been prosecuted for violent attacks on neo-Nazis. The ZDF argued that this passage, combined with the song's overall tone, could not be reconciled with its editorial standards even after a live performance.

This interference in freedom of opinion and art is scandalous.

Reactions

Danger Dan said the song had been submitted weeks in advance and approved by the show's own legal counsel. He described the last-minute cancellation as a "Rausschmiss" and a politically motivated ban. The "Anstalt" editorial team publicly distanced itself from the decision and announced it would critically address the disinvitation in the 21 July broadcast. The German Journalists' Association (DJV) and the Verdi trade union condemned the move as a serious encroachment on editorial independence.

Whether the song should be broadcast or not is for the editorial team to decide, and no one else.

ZDF's response

In an effort to provide context, the ZDF scheduled a special edition of its cultural magazine "Aspekte" for 18 July, dedicated to a journalistic examination of the song. The broadcaster maintained that the contradiction between the song's content and its guidelines could not be resolved, even within the satirical framing of "Die Anstalt." The upcoming "Anstalt" episode, which was originally planned to focus on the resilience of democracy amid political radicalisation, will now also include a segment on the controversy.

Broader context

Danger Dan, a 43-year-old from Aachen and member of the Antilopen Gang, has long walked the line between political provocation and artistic expression. His 2021 track "Das ist alles von der Kunstfreiheit gedeckt" has accumulated over 80 million streams on Spotify. The current dispute has reignited debate in Germany over the boundaries of artistic freedom in public broadcasting and the role of satire in addressing political extremism.
