The announcement came the morning after Club Brugge beat Inter Milan 4-3 on Tuesday, 13 October, in a match at San Siro, the stadium where Sommer returned for the first time since his four years at Inter. Sommer made several saves in that game, including one from a close-range shot by Lautaro Martínez. The couple met while Sommer was at Borussia Mönchengladbach, started dating in 2016 and married in 2019 in Cologne, where they have lived and still own several properties. Alina, a trained lawyer from Cologne, has largely stayed out of the public eye, and in a 2022 SRF documentary she said she had put her legal career on hold to focus on the children.

The couple's last joint Instagram post dates to 23 September 2025, from the Ballon d'Or ceremony in Paris, where Sommer was counted among the ten best goalkeepers in the world.
