Two incidents disrupt Warsaw metro M1: stroller and bag on tracks close six stations

Morning stroller incident

On Monday morning, an empty child's stroller fell from the platform onto the tracks at Wawrzyszew station on Warsaw's M1 metro line. According to Metro Warszawskie press officer Maciej Czerski, a woman holding her child became momentarily distracted, and the stroller rolled off the platform. A train entered the station shortly afterward and crushed the stroller. No one was injured.

Firefighters were dispatched to remove the remains of the stroller from the track bed. Metro spokesperson Anna Bartoń confirmed the incident and said crews were working on site. As a result, three northern stations were taken out of passenger service: Młociny, Wawrzyszew, and Stare Bielany. Trains on the M1 line were limited to a shortened loop between Kabaty and Słodowiec.

Afternoon bag incident

Later the same day, after 17:00, a bag was thrown onto the tracks at Centrum station in the city centre. This triggered a separate disruption, forcing the closure of three central stations: Centrum, Świętokrzyska, and Ratusz-Arsenał. The M1 line was split into two independent loops: Kabaty–Politechnika and Dworzec Gdański–Młociny. The incident was reported by the Polish Press Agency (PAP) at 17:45.

Replacement bus service

To bridge the gap left by the morning closures, the Public Transport Authority (ZTM) launched a replacement bus line, designated Za Metro. Buses ran from Metro Młociny to Metro Słodowiec, following the route: Kasprowicza, Sacharowa, Marymoncka, and Żeromskiego streets.

Due to an incident at Wawrzyszew station, there are disruptions to M1 line train services.

Passengers were advised to monitor current announcements and allow extra time for their journeys. No replacement bus was announced for the afternoon disruption, as the affected central stations were within walking distance of alternative lines.

Return to normal service

The afternoon disruption was resolved after 19:00, when the bag was removed and normal train movements resumed across the entire M1 line. The morning incident had been cleared earlier in the day, though the exact time was not specified in official communications. Both events caused significant delays but resulted in no injuries. Metro Warszawskie apologised for the inconvenience.
