Russia resumes air strikes on Kyiv following US envoy mission as diplomatic tensions with Germany escalate

Overnight strikes on Ukrainian cities

Russian forces launched an extensive overnight aerial bombardment across Ukraine on 8 September 2026, ending a three-day pause in attacks on the capital. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia fired 166 drones and dozens of missiles across several regions, including Kyiv, Odesa, and Sumy. In Kyiv, emergency sirens sounded as the capital activated its red alert protocol for missiles and jet-powered attack drones. Initial explosions were recorded around 03:30 local time, with monitoring channels reporting at least 12 ballistic missiles directed at the capital within one hour. Strikes damaged warehouses and industrial buildings in the suburban districts of Boryspil and Fastiv, while smoke rose over Maidan Square in central Kyiv. Ukrainian authorities confirmed at least two fatalities and between seven and ten injuries resulting from the overnight barrages. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that the assault began immediately after foreign delegates departed the country.

Cross-border attacks in Russian border regions

Ukrainian forces mounted retaliatory drone operations against targets inside Russian territory during the same period. In the city of Saratov, drone strikes damaged civilian infrastructure and wounded three people, according to regional governor Roman Busargin. Emergency services were dispatched to manage fires and debris across affected municipal sites. In the Bryansk region, a Ukrainian strike against a petrol station resulted in one death and left three other individuals injured. In response to the intensifying aerial engagements, the United Kingdom announced an allocation of 100 million pounds to bolster Ukrainian air defence systems and supply replacement interceptors.

Mixed assessments of the US diplomatic mission

The resumption of Russian bombardments followed the conclusion of discussions held by US presidential envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The two envoys conducted meetings in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin before travelling by train from Poland to Kyiv to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Witkoff described the talks as meaningful progress toward arranging future trilateral negotiations for a durable settlement. Ukrainian President Zelensky referred to the delegation visit as not useless, while Ukrainian media reported preparations for direct telephone discussions between Donald Trump, Putin, and Zelensky. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov took a more reserved tone regarding formal negotiations, which have remained stalled for more than six months.

Escalating diplomatic dispute between Moscow and Berlin

Diplomatic friction between Russia and Western governments widened alongside the battlefield developments. The Russian Foreign Ministry ordered the closure of the German Consulate General in Saint Petersburg, instructing all diplomatic staff to leave the country by 13 September 2026 before the mission ceases operations on 18 September. Russian authorities also mandated the termination of all Goethe-Institut cultural activities across the country. These actions followed Germany's closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn and the Russian House of Science and Culture in Berlin after explosive drones were detected at Leipzig airport. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov declared that Germany had engaged in direct hostility against Moscow.
