Iran captures US autonomous submarine in Strait of Hormuz amid naval strikes and rising oil prices

Submersible seizure in the Strait

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced the capture of an uncrewed United States military submarine near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz on 8 September. Iranian state media identified the craft as a Dive-LD autonomous underwater vehicle manufactured by California-based defense contractor Anduril Industries, valued at approximately $2.5 million. The vessel measures roughly 5.8 meters in length, weighs nearly three metric tons, and is designed to operate for up to 10 days at depths reaching 6,000 meters for seabed mapping, surveillance, and mine detection. The IRGC stated that the vessel was seized at dawn during a dedicated intelligence operation, later broadcasting video footage showing the intact submersible. United States Central Command stated that the submersible had suffered an operational malfunction more than a day earlier while surveying regional waters, downplaying the craft's technical sensitivity.

The defective drone was an older model that neither collected sensitive data nor carried any classified sonar or radar equipment.

Retaliatory strikes and naval exchanges

The capture coincided with an escalation of maritime and regional strikes across the six-month war. Following Iranian ballistic missile attacks on an American warship, United States forces destroyed five Iranian oil tankers overnight, striking four vessels in the Gulf of Oman and one near Kharg Island. Tehran responded on 9 September with retaliatory strikes around the strait, claiming it attacked ten commercial vessels, eight oil tankers, and two American warships, leaving at least one sailor dead and another missing. United States Central Command denied that any American vessels were hit, stating that all attempted strikes failed. In related regional actions, an uncrewed aerial vehicle struck a tanker carrying 2 million barrels of fuel oil in Iraqi waters without causing leaks, while air defense systems intercepted 18 of 20 Iranian missiles fired toward American bases in Jordan. In Saudi Arabia, strikes by Iranian-aligned Houthi forces wounded 73 people and knocked energy facilities offline.

Strategic and economic fallout

The naval strikes pushed crude oil prices above $100 per barrel for the first time since July, while stocks fell on Wall Street. Prior to the war, up to 20% of global oil and gas passed through the Strait of Hormuz, making the corridor critical to global energy supplies. The seizure allows Iranian specialists to examine the submersible's autonomous systems, drawing comparisons to Tehran's 2011 capture of an American RQ-170 Sentinel reconnaissance drone, which then-President Barack Obama requested returned before Iran produced domestic copies. The United States Navy had previously deployed a patrol ship and a Seahawk helicopter in 2022 to prevent Iranian forces from towing a Saildrone uncrewed surface vessel in the Gulf. Iranian diplomatic missions, including the embassy in Ghana, published posts mocking the loss of the submersible.

Of course Iran will take every opportunity as a propaganda win. It can help the (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) make better versions of their own designs.
