Reviewers for The Guardian and The Independent called the production lethargic and derivative of established survival media such as 28 Days Later and Mad Max. Adapting the post-pandemic novel

Screenwriter Mark L. Smith, whose prior credits include The Revenant and Twisters, adapted the script from the 2012 novel by Peter Heller. Set in 2035, nine years after an influenza pandemic eradicated most of the global population, the story centers on Hig, an introspective mechanic and pilot played by Jacob Elordi, who stepped into the role following the recast of Paul Mescal. Hig resides at an abandoned airfield hangar in Erie, Colorado, alongside Bangley, a heavily armed former Marine portrayed by Josh Brolin. While Bangley focuses on lethal perimeter defense and weapons fortification, Hig grieves for his late wife Melissa, played by Sai Bennett, while sharing daily life with his faithful dog Jasper. The two men operate under contrasting survival philosophies, balancing Bangley's cynical isolationism against Hig's persistent hope of finding surviving communities.

Visual design and ensemble cast

Cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt photographed the feature across Italian locations, utilizing Alpine foothills and rugged terrain throughout the Abruzzo and Lazio regions as environmental stand-ins for Colorado. Composer Harry Gregson-Williams created the musical score, infusing folk instrumentation into the portrayal of overgrown settlements. Within the story, Hig regularly maintains a yellow 1956 Cessna plane to scout for encroaching threats and collect supplies from what remains of Denver. The supporting cast includes Benedict Wong as Aaron, the leader of a nearby Mennonite group that Hig assists. Allison Janney, Guy Pearce, Alara-Star Khan, and Sebastian Rokison-Woodall fill additional roles across the ensemble.

Narrative journey and survival conflict

The plot shifts when Hig intercepts a voice transmission on his airplane radio, suggesting surviving human life near Grand Junction. Against Bangley's warnings, Hig flies west across the mountains and discovers a remote homestead occupied by Cima, played by Margaret Qualley, and her father Pops, played by Guy Pearce. Their fragile coexistence faces constant peril from hostile marauding factions, including face-painted militants known as Reapers who roam the Mountain West, alongside severe resource shortages and threats of cannibalism.
