Jesse Eisenberg's comedy The Debut premieres at Telluride with Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti

Jesse Eisenberg premiered his third feature film as writer and director, The Debut, at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado. The comedy features Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti in lead roles set within a local community playhouse. Following the Saturday afternoon screening, Rebecca Keagan of NBC News moderated an on-stage discussion with Eisenberg, Moore, and Giamatti. The event marked the first time Giamatti had seen the completed film. During the presentation, Moore drew sustained laughter and spontaneous mid-scene applause from the festival audience across two separate rehearsal sequences, generating strong initial reception for Eisenberg following his previous feature, A Real Pain.

Plot and community theatre setting

The film centres on Mona Friedman, played by Moore, an unassuming New Jersey housewife whose daily routine revolves around driving her children and cooking dinner for her husband, played by Patrick Fabian. After noticing a supermarket bulletin board casting call, Mona auditions for a local community playhouse musical titled Nosy Neighbors despite having zero stage acting experience and having not sung in front of anyone since church choir. The production is staged at a New Jersey recreation centre under the direction of Jerry, portrayed by Giamatti, a tyrannical local director billed as the biggest name in New Jersey community theater. Although the central role of building supervisor Miss Danielle goes to regional veteran Serena Cherry, who appears in an opening audition cameo played by Bernadette Peters, Mona secures a secondary part. The character quickly transforms into a zealous method actor who treats the marginal role with total dedication, while Eisenberg appears in a small song-and-dance role of his own.

Original music and awards campaign

In addition to writing and directing the project, Eisenberg composed all seven original songs featured across the fictional musical. Distributor A24 has confirmed that it will mount an Academy Award campaign for best original song centered on This City May Have Chewed Me Up (But It Hasn't Spit Me Out), which Moore performs on screen during the film. Under Academy rules, film studios may submit up to three songs from a single title for consideration, with no more than two permitted to receive final nominations. A24 has designated the Moore track as its top awards priority in a competitive seasonal field that includes original tracks from Taylor Swift, Travis Scott, David Byrne, SZA, Diane Warren, and the Backstreet Boys. Moore, who has received five Academy Award nominations across her career and won for Still Alice, enters the autumn season as a focal point of the studio's awards slate.

Festival circuit and release schedule

A24 has organized an extensive festival tour across North America and Europe ahead of the film's commercial theatrical distribution in late 2026. Following its Telluride world premiere, The Debut will screen at the Toronto International Film Festival, the New York Film Festival, and the Zurich Film Festival. At the Zurich event, Moore is scheduled to receive a career lifetime achievement award. The distributor plans to launch the film with a limited theatrical release in North American cinemas on December 11, 2026, followed by a wide commercial expansion across the Christmas holiday season.
