Storms Luise and Manja to bring gusts up to 100 km/h to northern and western Germany

Friday evening peak

The German Weather Service (DWD) expects a storm low to move in from the west on Friday, 23 October, with the strongest gusts arriving that evening. Warnings for the evening cover an area from the Rhineland to the Emsland, where severe storm gusts of up to 100 km/h are possible, and gusts of up to 110 km/h on the mountains. From midday the wind rises in the west and southwest, with widespread gusts of 55 to 75 km/h and gusts of Beaufort force 10 over the open North Sea. The peak runs through the first half of the night, and the wind only eases in the second half. Warning levels may still change during the day, so the official DWD warning map remains the reference. Robert Hausen, a DWD meteorologist, says the wind brings a raised danger from falling branches and flying objects.

Saturday and the second low

Two storm lows are involved. Luise formed over the eastern Atlantic and is called Austen internationally, and it is followed by Manja on Sunday, 25 October. On Saturday, 24 October, the wind eases a little but stays stormy, with rain continuing in the northeast and sunshine in the west and south. Sunday and the North Sea peak

Manja brings severe storm gusts to coastal regions on Sunday, 25 October, and N-tv forecasters say the storm surge risk rises as the wind turns more westerly. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are possible, while rain in the southeast can reach up to 80 litres per square metre in upland areas such as the Eifel, Rothaargebirge and Black Forest. Lutz Beckebanze, a DWD meteorologist, told NDR that Sunday will be stormy across the whole of northern Germany.

The wind is expected to peak on the North Sea coast in the night to Monday, 26 October, with heavy storm gusts and, in exposed places, hurricane-force gusts. Severe storm gusts on the Mecklenburg Baltic coast are not ruled out at the same time.

Ferries and foliage

Shipping is hit first on the islands. NDR reports that many connections to Helgoland will be cancelled, and the Halunder Jet does not run at all at the weekend, so travellers need to rebook. The DWD names Helgoland as particularly affected by the hurricane-force low. Berliner Zeitung also points out that most deciduous trees still carry full foliage at the end of October, which gives the wind several times the surface of a bare crown to push against. Garden and balcony furniture should be secured before the evening of 23 October.
