Investigation and arrest in Cuautla

Mexican security forces arrested Francisco Javier N, known by the alias 'El Trompas', on Thursday in the municipality of Cuautla, Morelos. The suspect was wanted for the murder of Claudia Tacoronte Aguilera, a 21-year-old Spanish exchange student from the Canary Islands. The operation involved coordinated action between the armed forces, state police, and the National Guard following an arrest warrant issued on Wednesday. Authorities located the suspect after a resident posted a sighting on a local social media marketplace group named Super Tianguis Cocodrilos. The post alerted police that the suspect had shaved his head and changed clothes near the Alameda area in downtown Cuautla. Police patrols responded to the commercial district near Plaza y Fuerte Galeana, where officers intercepted and detained the suspect.

Circumstances of the attack

Tacoronte, an undergraduate from the University of Granada, arrived in Mexico on 17 August 2026 for a semester exchange at the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM). She had travelled to Cuautla to participate in a municipal workshop on medicinal plants and was lodging at the local Casa de la Cultura. Security camera recordings showed the assailant approaching her at approximately 20:49 on Saturday as she stood near the entrance using her mobile phone. Investigators determined that the assailant fatally stabbed Tacoronte during a robbery to take her phone, while ruling out sexual assault. State records show the suspect had previously served a two-year prison sentence in Cuautla between 2010 and 2012 for theft, in addition to prior arrests for residential burglary.

Diplomatic coordination and confessions

Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs José Manuel Albares confirmed on Friday that Mexican authorities informed him the suspect had confessed to the crime. Albares spoke with Mexican diplomatic officials to track the investigation and expressed gratitude for the rapid police response. He stated that Spanish embassy and consular personnel remain in contact with Tacoronte's relatives to provide assistance. Albares emphasized that diplomatic channels will maintain oversight until all responsibilities are legally established. Mexican Secretary of Security Omar García Harfuch stated that preventing violence against women remains an institutional priority under President Claudia Sheinbaum.

When it has not been possible to prevent a woman from becoming a victim of this violence, our obligation is to clarify the facts, arrest those responsible, and fight impunity with the full force of the state.

Legal proceedings and state response

Morelos Attorney General Fernando Blumenkron Escobar announced that prosecutors will seek the maximum statutory penalty of 70 years in prison under femicide charges. The suspect is currently held at the Cuautla district detention facility awaiting formal judicial hearings. Morelos Governor Margarita González Saravia affirmed that state investigators will continue gathering evidence to determine full legal culpability across all related offenses. State authorities reiterated that they will pursue every aspect of the case to prevent impunity.
