On Monday, 14 September 2026, a Russian naval frigate fired two pyrotechnic flares toward a Royal Danish Air Force helicopter in international waters off the Baltic coast. The Danish Defence Command stated that the Fennec aircraft was conducting a routine surveillance mission to photograph the Russian warship off Gedser, Denmark's southernmost town. According to military officials, one of the flares passed within a matter of metres of the helicopter, narrowly missing the fuselage. The Danish military reported no physical damage to the aircraft and confirmed that the crew returned safely from the patrol. Danish Defence Minister Jeppe Bruus characterized the launch as deeply unprofessional seamanship on TV 2 News, emphasizing that normal maritime communication channels were ignored.

Political reaction in Copenhagen

Government officials in Copenhagen responded by demanding formal explanations from Moscow and consulting domestic political factions. Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen called the engagement unacceptable, warning that such actions endanger human lives and shift the boundaries of permissible maritime conduct. Rasmussen formally summoned Russian Ambassador Vladimir Barbin to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for discussions regarding the encounter. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that the incident aligned with an established pattern of Russian pressure against European security and tests of NATO resolve.

Russia wants to sow fear and discord.

Bruus clarified that Denmark will not invoke Article 4 consultations or Article 5 collective defence provisions under the North Atlantic Treaty. He scheduled briefings with leaders of all parliamentary parties at the defence ministry to review the Baltic security situation.

Diplomatic confrontation and Moscow's stance

Moscow rejected Denmark's account of the confrontation, placing responsibility for the incident on the helicopter crew. Ambassador Vladimir Barbin stated through state media that the Danish aircraft performed provocative and dangerous manoeuvres in close proximity to the Russian warship.

I demanded that the Danish side take the necessary measures to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future, and handed over a note to that effect.

Barbin handed a diplomatic note to Danish authorities demanding preventive steps against future aerial approaches over Russian vessels. He referenced a previous dispute from 27 August 2025, when a Danish military helicopter conducted low-altitude fly-bys over the Russian anti-submarine vessel Vice-Admiral Kulakov. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on the encounter, stating he did not possess operational details.

Alliance response and regional maritime security

Denmark shared information regarding the encounter with allied governments across the NATO alliance on Tuesday. NATO spokesperson Allison Hart stated that Moscow's conduct would not alter allied posture or deter collective security efforts in Northern Europe.

Denmark informed Allies about an incident yesterday in which a Russian frigate launched flare rockets against a Danish military helicopter. While opposition lawmakers in Denmark urged firmer countermeasures, the Danish government maintained that its military will continue standard air and naval patrols within international waters.
