Polish Olympic Committee faces leadership crisis and debt after president's arrest

Arrest and criminal allegations

Radosław Piesiewicz, who has led the Polish Olympic Committee (PKOl) since 2023, has been held in pre-trial detention since 27 August 2026. Prosecutors secured a three-month detention order in connection with an investigation into the cryptocurrency platform Zondacrypto. Investigators charged the 45-year-old sports administrator with paid protection and unlawful satisfaction of select creditors to the detriment of others during impending insolvency. His detention has paralyzed committee operations and triggered an emergency review across the organization.

Deepening financial deficit and car leases

On 8 September 2026, the PKOl presidium met for three hours to assess the committee's financial condition following a report by secretary Marek Pałus. Annual committee operations cost more than 10 million PLN, with monthly spending reaching nearly 1 million PLN across salaries, fixed overheads, and vehicle leases. Officials discovered that car leasing agreements, which many believed were barter arrangements, were signed directly by Piesiewicz and carry liabilities estimated between 1 and 2 million PLN. Sports federations including rugby, rowing, gymnastics, and taekwondo are waiting for unpaid disbursements. Board member Adam Korol stated that existing committee funds may cover operational costs only until the end of September.

Internal division and leadership succession

The presidium recommended invoking Article 21 of the PKOl statute at a full board session scheduled for 14 September 2026 at 13:00 to transfer executive duties to one of eight vice presidents until the end of the term in April 2027. Among the 16 presidium members present on 8 September, only four explicitly demanded Piesiewicz's immediate dismissal, with others citing the presumption of innocence. Vice presidents Tomasz Chamera and Marian Kmita are considered the primary contenders for the interim role, while Maja Włoszczowska and Sebastian Świderski declined to seek the post. Four-time Olympic race walking champion Robert Korzeniowski announced his candidacy for the regular presidential election in April 2027, describing lingering loyalty to Piesiewicz on TOK FM as a form of institutional entrapment.

We are also dealing here with Stockholm victim syndrome. Someone was blackmailed, someone was pressured, and now they will defend their persecutor so that something does not come to light, and that is all. They are mentally together forever.

Government reaction and Olympic scrutiny

Government ministers have ruled out public assistance while demanding an overhaul of the Olympic body's governance. Speaking in Gdańsk, Sports and Tourism Minister Jakub Rutnicki accused Piesiewicz of prioritizing personal financial gain while leaving Olympic medalists without promised prize money.

Piesiewicz is a man who brazenly used the image of Polish athletes to legitimize the company Zondacrypto. This is a man who prioritizes his own interest, a man who could not find the money to pay prizes to Polish Olympic medalists. Right away, however, he found the opportunity to give himself a raise.

Deputy Sports Minister Piotr Borys confirmed that sponsors have withdrawn and that representatives of the International Olympic Committee have contacted Polish officials seeking formal explanations.

Neither State Treasury companies nor any private entity will enter into funding the PKOl today, which is so heavily burdened in terms of image. What happened is the biggest image disaster in the history of Polish sport. This was brought about by Mr. Piesiewicz and PiS politicians.

Borys stated that restoring the organization's standing will require an extended effort before domestic and international partners.
