Poland Examines Russian Gerbera Drone Found Drifting onto Baltic Beach

Polish military units and hydrographic personnel secured a Russian unmanned aerial vehicle on Monday after it was spotted drifting in the Baltic Sea toward the beach in Rusinowo, near Jarosławiec in West Pomerania. Authorities cordoned off the shoreline area to conduct preliminary field examinations into Tuesday. Lieutenant Colonel Dariusz Rozkosz, spokesperson for the Military Gendarmerie General Headquarters, confirmed that chemical, radiological, and biological screening ruled out contamination, while pyrotechnic examinations were scheduled separately. The District Prosecutor's Office in Szczecin initiated an investigation supervised by its military department, citing provisions on creating a public danger and Article 212 of the Aviation Law regarding unauthorised border crossings.

Identification and intelligence assessment

Preliminary examinations by Polish defence specialists indicated that the craft was a Russian Gerbera-type drone, a platform frequently deployed in Ukraine for aerial reconnaissance and as a decoy to divert air defence systems. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that the device was likely lost during Russian military exercises over the Baltic Sea before drifting ashore. Government spokesperson Adam Szłapka noted that the vehicle appeared to be an unarmed plastic decoy that entered the sea far from Polish territory before currents carried it to land. Military counterintelligence analysts secured the physical structure to inspect its internal electronics and fabrication standards.

This drone is probably even more advanced than those we have been able to analyse so far. This is very important for the Military Counterintelligence Service, for all the analysing services. Most likely it was lost by the Russian Federation during some manoeuvre trials over the Baltic Sea.

Rail strikes near the eastern border

The seaside recovery occurred alongside intensified Russian aerial strikes targeting logistical hubs in western Ukraine near the Polish frontier. A Russian drone exploded approximately 30 kilometres from the Dorohusk-Jagodzin border crossing in Volyn, damaging a diesel locomotive and triggering a fire. That strike followed a Sunday attack directly at the Jagodzin-Dorohusk checkpoint, where a Geran-4 drone struck a technical locomotive assigned to move passenger carriages on the Kyiv-Warsaw railway route. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha reported that over 500 locomotives have suffered damage or destruction since Russia began its full-scale invasion, with more than half hit in 2026 alone. The Russian Defence Ministry claimed responsibility for strikes on western Ukrainian rail infrastructure, stating that the operations targeted freight trains carrying Western military cargo.

Heightened air readiness and border alerts

Escalating aerial operations along the border prompted the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command to scramble domestic fighter jets shortly before 03:00 on Tuesday. Government authorities issued regional alert text messages to residents in Lubelskie and Podkarpackie voivodeships before withdrawing the warnings around 04:00. The Ukrainian Air Force reported intercepting 187 out of 200 Russian drones launched during overnight operations across Ukraine, with strikes recorded in Kyiv against warehouse sites and a fuel station. Polish military aircraft concluded their protective sorties at approximately 05:30 with no detected violations of Polish airspace. Polish officials connected the overall pattern of border activity to broader Russian pressure across eastern NATO territory.

The coming weeks and months will be a period of very intensified actions from the Russian side and we cannot rule out, unfortunately, that this escalation will also affect our territory.
