Paranormal Activity horror stage adaptation opens on Broadway following multi-city tour

Theatrical adaptation and design

The stage adaptation of Paranormal Activity has opened on Broadway for a limited run following an international development path. Directed by Felix Barrett, artistic director of the immersive theatre company Punchdrunk, and scripted by playwright Levi Holloway, the production bypasses the found-footage format of the cinematic franchise in favor of traditional theatrical stagecraft. Illusions designer Chris Fisher, whose previous design credits include the stage productions of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Back to the Future, and Stranger Things, created the show's practical visual effects. Instead of simulated video feeds, the production relies on physical mechanisms, mirrors, ropes, and pulleys to engineer supernatural occurrences across the stage.

Staging and technical production

Scenic designer Fly Davis built a two-story dollhouse set sliced down the center like a cake, granting the audience continuous visibility across every room in the London residence. Theatergoers function as a collective camera, watching live domestic spaces without the aid of cinematic editing, close-ups, or cutaway angles. Lighting designer Anna Watson coordinates foreboding visual shifts, while sound designer Gareth Fry delivers sharp auditory shocks, including sudden loud doorbells, electrical glitches, and extended sequences spoken in complete darkness. The production follows an Aristotelian two-act structure, mounting tension through the opening act toward a scare before intermission, which then unfolds into second-act chaos and an energetic finale.

Domestic plot and character tensions

The narrative follows an American couple, Lou and James, who have been married for one year and have relocated from Chicago to London. Lou, portrayed by Cher Álvarez, experiences persistent dread and psychological distress following unexplained blackouts and missing time during their life in Chicago. Travis A. Knight plays James, a skeptical spouse who attempts to offer reassurance while prematurely furnishing a nursery room and arranging a contingency bell for communication from beyond the grave. Their domestic tension is further strained by intrusive video calls with James's evangelical mother in Florida, Carolanne, played by Shannon Cochran.

Development history and box office legacy

The stage venture expands a cinematic property originating in 2006, when filmmaker Oren Peli produced the initial independent horror film on a $15,000 budget, eventually grossing nearly $200 million in worldwide box office receipts. Playwright Holloway previously mounted the horror production Grey House on Broadway in 2023. This adaptation premiered in England in 2024 before touring North American venues in Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., San Francisco, Toronto, and Boston prior to its arrival in New York. The theatrical transfer arrives while an eighth cinematic film in the franchise is scheduled for release in 2027.
