Bank employee killed in knife attack at Regensburg branch; 20-year-old suspect arrested after three-hour standoff
A 20-year-old German man was arrested after a knife attack at a HypoVereinsbank branch in Regensburg left a male employee dead. Police initially feared a hostage situation but now treat the case as homicide and attempted robbery.
Incident
A knife attack at a HypoVereinsbank branch in the western part of Regensburg left one employee dead on Thursday afternoon. Police were alerted at 14:50 local time (13:00 GMT) after a violent incident inside the ground-floor premises of a large residential and commercial building. The victim, a male member of staff, suffered life-threatening stab wounds. Emergency services were initially unable to reach him because the attacker remained inside the building, and officers could only maintain visual contact for some time. The man was eventually extracted and taken to hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly afterwards.
Victim and suspect
The deceased was an employee of HypoVereinsbank. The bank issued a statement saying it was 'deeply shocked by the loss of one of our colleagues as a result of this tragic incident' and that its thoughts were with his family, friends and affected co-workers. The suspect is a 20-year-old German national. He was taken into custody at about 18:00, roughly three hours after the alarm was raised. Special forces arrested him inside the bank without resistance, and he remained uninjured. Two other people who had been inside the branch were later escorted to safety by police; they appeared unharmed.
Police operation
A large-scale response was mounted, involving heavily armed special units (SEK), a police helicopter and a wide cordon around the area. Officers initially treated the situation as a possible hostage-taking because the number of people inside the building was unclear for several hours. A police spokesperson later confirmed that investigators now classify the case as a homicide and an attempted robbery, and that they are working on the assumption of a lone perpetrator. 'There are currently no indications of a second suspect,' the spokesperson said.

Reactions
Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann expressed dismay at the killing. He described the victim as having been subjected to a 'brutal, unprovoked attack' and said the man 'obviously had no chance'. Herrmann added that the special forces' operation had been 'professional and precise'. Regensburg's mayor, Thomas Burger, said many residents in the western part of the city had endured 'hours of great uncertainty' and that he himself was deeply shaken by the events.
Next steps
The suspect is due to be brought before a judge on Friday. Police and prosecutors have scheduled a press conference for midday to release further details, including any information about a possible motive. The investigation remains ongoing, and the crime scene is still being examined.
