Congressional inquiry into wedding funding

Garcia sent formal letters to White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and to Trump Jr, requesting communications and financial records related to celebrations hosted around Trump Jr's wedding in the Bahamas. An investigation by ProPublica reported that Kremlev spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on events surrounding the 24 May 2026 nuptials of Trump Jr and Bettina Anderson. Garcia requested details of all dates of communication between the men, records of purchases by foreign nationals, and a full list of wedding gifts.

As the son of President Donald Trump and the part-owner and major investor of multiple companies with extensive Department of Defense contracts, any apparent ties to members of Russian President Vladimir Putin's inner circle raises serious questions about pay-to-play schemes and foreign intelligence infiltration of the President's family.

Reactions from the Trump family

Both Trump Jr and Anderson confirmed Kremlev's financial role, describing the events as a post-wedding gift. Payments routed through a Dubai-based entity tied to the International Boxing Association covered private island rentals and a fireworks display, with reports valuing the gift at approximately 150,000 euros. Anderson wrote on Instagram that Kremlev hosted two nights of celebrations following the official wedding ceremony. In a public statement, President Donald Trump said that he did not attend the celebration and maintained that he had no familiarity with Kremlev.

I have no idea who Umar is, never heard of him, and he didn't pay for Don and Bettina's wedding, which took place at a totally different location, and on a different day from the wedding. It was an 'afterparty' given in their honor. Not a big deal! I was not present at the party.

The rise of Umar Kremlev

Born Umar Lutfulloyev in Serpukhov in November 1982, Kremlev competed in amateur boxing under trainer Alexei Galeev until age 19, later graduating from the Moscow State Academy of Public Utilities and Construction. He accumulated convictions for extortion in 2004 and assault in 2007 before changing his surname to Kremlev in 2010. During the same period, he joined the Night Wolves motorcycle club and formed ties with Alexei Rubezhny, an officer in Russia's Federal Protective Service who later became head of presidential security. Kremlev married Rubezhny's sister and established the boxing promotion firm Patriot, which represented former American world champion Roy Jones Jr. In 2017, Kremlev became secretary general of the Russian Boxing Federation, placing Rubezhny on its supervisory board alongside Rosneft chief executive Igor Sechin.

International boxing tenure and state ties

Kremlev was elected president of the International Boxing Association in 2020, securing sponsorship funds from Russian state energy firm Gazprom to settle the organisation's debts. His administration relocated central operations from Lausanne to Russia, contributing to disputes that culminated in 2023 when the International Olympic Committee withdrew recognition from the IBA. In Russia, state authorities granted Kremlev commercial control over online sports betting, the national lottery, and a state-seized automobile manufacturer. Ukrainian authorities placed Kremlev on a sanctions list, while Russian President Vladimir Putin awarded him the Order of Friendship in April 2026 and included him in an official delegation to China in May 2026.
