Bucharest and Bacău Nord linked by 310.59-kilometre motorway after junction opening

Traffic opened on the Bacău Nord junction on 5 September, restoring the final four kilometres of the Bacău Bypass and completing a 310.59-kilometre direct motorway link from Bucharest on the A3 and A7.

Reopening of the Bacău bypass

The Bacău Nord road junction opened to vehicular traffic on Saturday, 5 September 2026, restoring full vehicle access across the entire 16-kilometre length of the Bacău Bypass. The orbital route operates as an integral component of the A7 Moldavia Motorway. The reopening followed the completion of the final four kilometres of the bypass, which had been temporarily closed to allow road crews to construct intersections linking active and planned sections of the motorway corridor. General Director of the National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration (CNAIR) Cristian Pistol announced the opening on Saturday.

Direct motorway route from Bucharest

The commissioning of the interchange establishes an uninterrupted motorway route connecting the Romanian capital directly to northern Bacău. Drivers travelling the 310.59 kilometres between Bucharest and Bacău Nord can complete the full journey exclusively on motorways by taking the A3 and transitioning onto the A7. CNAIR estimates that motorists can cover this continuous route in less than three hours without leaving high-speed thoroughfares. The A7 motorway is planned to function as the principal high-speed road spine connecting southern Romania with urban and commercial centres throughout the eastern and north-eastern regions of the country.

Phased construction and junction integration

The return of traffic to the bypass occurred in two stages across late August and early September. One week prior to the junction opening, authorities inaugurated the Adjud to Bacău motorway section on the A7. That opening restored approximately 12 kilometres of the Bacău Bypass to active traffic, extending as far as the junction with the DN2F national road. Reopening the final four kilometres on Saturday completed the full 16-kilometre bypass alignment, which had been restricted while workers built the links between the Focșani to Bacău and Bacău to Pașcani motorway sections.

Future connections on the Moldavia motorway

Completing the junction works during this construction phase is intended to avoid future traffic interruptions as adjacent motorway sections enter service. CNAIR indicated that connecting the interchange now ensures that the Bacău Bypass will remain open during future construction on subsequent lots. Cristian Pistol explained the planning behind the junction integration.

From this moment, the Bucharest - Bacău Nord distance (310.59 kilometres) is covered entirely on motorway, on A3 and A7, in less than 3 hours. By completing the connection at the Bacău Nord Road Junction now, there will be no need for a new closure of the Bacău Bypass when Lot 1 (Săucești - Trifești) of the Bacău - Pașcani section is completed.

When Lot 1 of the Bacău to Pașcani section, spanning between Săucești and Trifești, reaches completion, traffic on the bypass will proceed without requiring another operational closure. The fully reopened bypass and the operational Bacău Nord junction establish continuous travel along operational sections of the A7 while preparing the motorway network for future northern extensions.
