Mistral AI secures €3 billion Series D round led by Samsung at €21 billion valuation
The Paris-based artificial intelligence company will use the capital to double proprietary compute power and build data centers across Europe, aiming for 1 gigawatt of capacity by 2030.
Funding and ownership details
Paris-based artificial intelligence startup Mistral AI completed a €3 billion (about $3.58 billion) Series D funding round on 8 September 2026. The investment raises the company's post-money valuation to €21 billion (about $24.39 billion), up from €12 billion reported in 2025 and €2 billion in late 2023. South Korean semiconductor manufacturer Samsung Electronics led the round alongside the Scaleup Europe Fund, which is backed by the European Commission and managed by EQT, and existing shareholder PSG Equity. Additional participants in the transaction include the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Advent, and investment funds managed by BlackRock. Earlier investors in Mistral AI include Nvidia, Microsoft, Salesforce, ASML, and French institutions such as BNP Paribas, Bpifrance, Carmignac, and Eurazeo.
We have found that we can build models with better economic efficiency than our competitors and therefore our capital needs are not as vast.

Infrastructure and compute plans
The company plans to allocate the fresh capital across research, product development, and physical infrastructure. Mistral AI is currently deploying €4 billion into data center projects across Europe, including an active facility on the outskirts of Paris and another site under construction in Sweden. Chief executive Arthur Mensch stated that the startup plans to expand its proprietary computing capacity by roughly 100% over the next five years, supporting a longer-term objective to establish 1 gigawatt of computing capacity in Europe by 2030. In August 2026, the firm introduced features allowing enterprise clients to designate specific geographic regions for processing their artificial intelligence queries.

Commercial deployment and semiconductor ties
Under the transaction terms, Samsung plans to incorporate Mistral AI solutions, including its Mistral Large model, directly into its semiconductor design and production workflows. Beyond industrial hardware, Mistral AI maintains a non-exclusive agreement with the French government to deploy artificial intelligence applications across public ministries and cybersecurity divisions. The company's staff grew from 250 employees in spring 2025 to approximately 1,000 by September 2026. Chief financial officer Johan Bergqvist noted that the firm is on track to reach €1 billion in annualized revenue, driven partly by enterprise services and its conversational assistant Vibe, formerly known as Le Chat.
Mistral demonstrates its ability to forge strategic partnerships with major industrial players to bring Europe into the ranks of the world's leading AI powers.
European sovereignty and global operations
Mistral AI has positioned itself as an alternative to American and Chinese suppliers, aiming to provide software that organizations can run and modify on independent infrastructure. While American competitors operate at larger capital scales, with OpenAI raising $110 billion in March 2026 and Anthropic preparing a public listing, Mistral AI now operates across 20 countries. To serve corporate and public clients seeking regulatory compliance, the platform also hosts select open-weight third-party models alongside its own systems. French President Emmanuel Macron stated on social media that the partnership between French and South Korean firms advances efforts to establish an independent option in global technology.
