Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers arrested British commentator Milo Yiannopoulos on 27 August at the airport in New Orleans, Louisiana. Yiannopoulos stated that 15 federal agents surrounded him at the terminal before placing him into custody. The 41-year-old former editor said officers secured him in hand and foot shackles during transfers across detention facilities. He claimed that authorities withheld food for 24 hours and moved him frequently to prevent his legal team from establishing contact. Federal officials processed his removal two days after his arrest, placing him on a flight back to the United Kingdom on 28 August. In a broadcast interview on 1 September, Yiannopoulos described the custody process as degrading and frightening.

Removal order and legal status

The Department of Homeland Security stated that Yiannopoulos entered the country legally in May 2019 but remained after his legal status expired. Federal records show that an immigration judge issued a final order of removal on 22 July after Yiannopoulos failed to appear for a scheduled hearing. Speaking on Piers Morgan Uncensored, Yiannopoulos disputed the government's characterization and denied knowingly overstaying a visa. He argued that he is married to an American citizen and maintained a green card that required renewal every two years, an arrangement differing from ordinary permanent residency rules. Outside the formal proceedings, right-wing media commentator Mike Cernovich defended Yiannopoulos, arguing publicly that the British citizen was spiritually American.

Reversal on immigration enforcement

The deportation followed years of hardline rhetoric from Yiannopoulos supporting mass deportations and strict border controls. As recently as June, he published online messages calling for immigration checkpoints at California supermarkets, petrol stations, and street intersections with immediate deportations for anyone unable to verify legal status. During his broadcast exchange with Piers Morgan, the presenter pressed him on his past statements demanding the indiscriminate removal of Somali immigrants. Yiannopoulos dismissed his previous rhetoric as exaggerated jokes, stating that personal experience in detention changed his perspective. He noted that he had previously dismissed accounts from other detainees regarding harsh conditions in federal facilities.

Break with the Trump movement

The arrest cemented a public break between Yiannopoulos and Donald Trump, whom the commentator had supported since the 2016 presidential campaign. Yiannopoulos previously worked as an editor at Breitbart News before resigning in 2017, and later assisted the musician Ye with preparations for a 2024 political campaign. During the interview, Yiannopoulos expressed shame over his political advocacy for Trump and criticized the administration's current leadership. He pointed to the Department of Justice's handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files and the outbreak of war in Iran as earlier points of contention. He described the political movement surrounding the president as erratic and unstable, concluding that he would not have offered his initial backing had he anticipated the current administration's trajectory.
