Mexican federal lawmaker Zenyazen Escobar was found dead inside his vehicle with a gunshot wound in the eastern state of Veracruz on September 4, 2026. Authorities located the 42-year-old ruling Morena party legislator in the community of La Gloria, within the municipality of Puente Nacional along the highway connecting the state capital Xalapa to the port of Veracruz. Escobar was found in the driver seat of an intact black Mercedes-Benz parked on the highway shoulder, with a firearm resting between his legs. State officials confirmed that the vehicle exhibited no external damage or indications of an armed ambush.

Veracruz Secretary of Government Ricardo Ahued stated that investigators are examining the interior of the vehicle to establish what took place.

The death was caused by a firearm, we cannot expand. It was not an attack because the car is to the side, it does not show that there was any major aggression to the vehicle, it was internal.

Investigation and legislative profile

Veracruz State Attorney General Lisbeth Jiménez reported that the regional prosecution service has opened a formal investigation file into the circumstances surrounding Escobar's death. Ahued announced that the federal Attorney General's Office (FGR) will draw the case to review the evidence alongside local investigators. The lower house of Mexico's Congress issued condolences to Escobar's family and called for a thorough judicial inquiry into the incident. Escobar worked as a middle school teacher and union organizer before serving as the Veracruz state education secretary between 2018 and 2021 during the administration of former governor Cuitláhuac García. He assumed office as a federal deputy in 2024, representing Veracruz and serving as secretary on the Navy and Climate Change commissions.

Violence in the legislative term

Escobar is the second sitting member of the LXVI Legislature to die from gunfire in Veracruz. On December 9, 2024, federal lawmaker Benito Aguas Atlahua of the Green Party was fatally shot in the Sierra de Zongolica region and died hours later in a hospital. Prior to the legislative term, federal deputy-elect Héctor Melesio Cuén of Sinaloa was killed in July 2024 during the arrest of drug trafficker Ismael Zambada. Escobar had drawn national attention on May 28, 2026, during a 30-hour debate on electoral reforms presented by President Claudia Sheinbaum, when he confronted PRI deputy Carlos Gutiérrez Mancilla on the floor of the Chamber of Deputies.

Electoral climate and political violence

The death occurs nine months before scheduled municipal, legislative, and gubernatorial elections set for June 6. Mexico's National Electoral Institute (INE) has warned that organized criminal organizations present significant operational challenges to democratic voting processes, documenting previous instances of voter intimidation, theft, and destruction of election materials. Human rights group Data Cívica recorded at least 30 incidents of political-criminal violence across 11 Mexican states during July 2026, resulting in 14 homicides. The monitoring group registered the highest concentration of incidents in Zacatecas with 10 cases, followed by Michoacán and Quintana Roo with four each, Oaxaca with three, and Veracruz and Baja California with two each.
