Madrid to extend metro network by 32 kilometres and introduce 24-hour weekend service on Line 6

Continuous weekend operations on Line 6

Madrid Regional President Isabel Díaz Ayuso will present a comprehensive package of public transport reforms at the Community of Madrid Assembly during the State of the Region debate on Thursday. Under the regional executive's proposal, Line 6 will operate continuously for 24 hours every weekend once full automation is deployed. Trains will run without interruption from 06:00 on Friday morning until the close of service early Monday morning around 01:30. Line 6 serves as the primary circular interchange in the capital, accommodating over 430,000 passengers each day across connections with ten metro lines, five transit hubs, four commuter rail stations, and the South Bus Station. Regional authorities plan to complete the automation process with driverless train sets during 2027, replacing standard weekend night closures with uninterrupted circulation.

Network expansion across south and north suburbs

The regional administration will allocate over 1.1 billion euros toward expanding the underground network by 32 kilometres across suburban municipalities and northern districts. The largest single project will extend Line 10 by 6.5 kilometres from Puerta del Sur in Alcorcón to the Manuela Malasaña station in Móstoles, adding at least six new stations at an estimated cost of 1.05 billion euros. Line 10 currently carries roughly 300,000 passengers daily, and the extension will provide direct connections toward central Madrid. Preparatory studies for Line 10 will run between 2027 and 2029, with construction scheduled from 2030 to 2034. In northern Madrid, Line 1 will gain 1.5 kilometres of tunnel and up to two stations in Las Tablas through an investment of 150 million euros, with works planned between 2030 and 2032. Metro Ligero Line 3 will also extend by 1.5 kilometres to Valenoso in Boadilla del Monte with two surface stops and a terminal on a 25-million-euro budget.

Studies for Line 11 and southern link

Technical studies for the southern section of Line 11 will begin in September 2026 through an adjustment to an existing engineering contract overseen by regional transport minister Jorge Rodrigo. The Directorate General of Infrastructure plans to assess an extension running from La Fortuna to the Poza del Agua neighbourhood in Leganés. This project will activate an unused Metrosur (Line 12) station located between Puerta del Sur and San Nicasio, providing local residents with two distinct subway connections. The new alignment follows the suspension of an earlier planned extension toward Cuatro Vientos after the Ministry of Defence vetoed the original design.

It will connect different municipalities and neighbourhoods and encourage more direct journeys between different points in the Community of Madrid.

Single fare unification and station automation

The regional government will also modify transit ticketing by re-establishing a flat 1.50-euro price for single tickets across Zone A starting in October 2026. The revision eliminates the variable surcharge of 10 cents per station beyond the fifth stop, which had capped fares at 2.00 euros since June 2012. Additionally, Metro de Madrid will deploy remote video-call assistance on next-generation vending machines across 209 terminals in 70 station lobbies under the Estación 4.0 modernization program. The digital upgrade involves a nine-million-euro investment financed through European Union recovery funds, allowing passengers to speak directly with customer service agents for route guidance and automated purchases.
