Partial lunar eclipse to darken up to 96 percent of Moon over Central Europe on Friday

Astronomers emphasize that viewing this eclipse requires no protective eyewear because reflected moonlight poses no risk to human vision. Observers will see the eclipsed portion take on a reddish or copper tint as sunlight scatters and refracts through the atmosphere of the Earth. Uwe Pilz, the chairman of the Vereinigung der Sternfreunde in Bensheim, noted that the early phase provides the clearest opportunity for observation before dawn:

As the event progresses toward its maximum, the Moon will drop closer to the west-southwest horizon while morning twilight brightens the sky. In Germany, the Moon will set before it fully leaves the umbra at 07:52 CEST. Astronomers recommend using binoculars to boost the optical contrast between the darkening Moon and the approaching sunrise, though smartphones and telephoto cameras will also capture the scene.

Meteorological conditions across Central Europe will heavily influence where the eclipse can be observed. The German Weather Service reported that an incoming cold front will spread cloud cover, rain showers, and isolated thunderstorms across western and northern Germany. In North Rhine-Westphalia, dense clouds will likely obscure the western sky during the critical hours before sunrise. This partial eclipse is part of a broader cycle of astronomical occurrences scheduled for the coming months and years. On 14 September 2026, skywatchers in Central Europe will have the chance to observe a midday lunar occultation of Venus, where the Moon will temporarily pass directly in front of the planet. Another penumbral lunar eclipse will follow during the night of 21 February 2027, although that event will produce only faint dimming across the lunar surface. The next total lunar eclipse visible from the region will take place on 31 December 2028, when the entire lunar disc will become fully submerged in Earth's umbra.
