Vuelta a España restricts influencer Erola Jons after rider interviews draw backlash
Race organizer Unipublic limited social media creator Erola Jons's paddock access after UAE Team Emirates complained about flirtatious interactions with Tadej Pogačar and Josh Tarling.
Paddock interactions and team complaints
The 2026 Vuelta a España hired 28-year-old Catalan social media creator Erola Jons to broadcast live behind-the-scenes material across the race's official YouTube, Facebook, X, and Twitch channels during all 21 stages. Organizers intended the collaboration to attract younger audiences with limited interest in professional cycling. Jons received near-total access to team buses, paddocks, and podium zones. During initial stages, she approached race leader Tadej Pogačar, calling him "Pogachítar" and asking why he hyperventilated whenever he saw her. She also approached British cyclist Josh Tarling, whose brother died the previous week, and told viewers she had 20 stages left to win him over. These encounters prompted Pogačar's team, UAE Team Emirates, to submit a formal complaint to race organizers.

Backlash from cycling broadcasters
The viral footage generated widespread criticism from established cycling commentators and sports journalists in Spain. Eurosport commentator Javier Ares addressed the situation during the stage three broadcast, arguing that organizers made an error in both the person selected and the narrative approach.
The purpose of hiring a content creator who could give transcendence to the race is fine. But they were wrong in the person and in the approach.
Three-time Grand Tour winner Alberto Contador echoed these concerns during television analysis. Contador noted that while introducing new personalities to cycling can benefit the sport, minimum professional standards were not observed.
I think it is interesting to bring in new people or people from different sectors because they can bring cycling to a different audience. I think that is good, but obviously always with minimum standards that I think in this case are not being met.
Journalist Laura Meseguer also criticized the promotional strategy in a column for El País, describing the content as sexist. Meseguer argued that relying on flirtatious humor devalues the sport and undermines female sports journalists.
We must ensure that the cost does not erode the progress women have made in this industry, or devalue the sport and its athletes in the pursuit of entertainment and 'likes'.
Access restrictions and organizer response
On stage three, Vuelta organizer Unipublic announced new restrictions on Jons's accreditation following the complaint from UAE Team Emirates. The organization stated in an explanation to El País that Jons will no longer have unrestricted access to riders and team enclosures. Under the revised terms, all filming and interactions require prior authorization from the organization. Unipublic defended its broader social media strategy, framing the content as entertainment rather than an intrusion into traditional journalism. Jons celebrated the viral reach of her initial clips online, stating on social media that her videos broke the internet and that she planned to continue producing content.
Audience metrics and content strategy
Jons maintains a digital audience in Spain consisting of 3.2 million followers on Instagram and 2.9 million followers on TikTok. Her content career developed through hidden-camera flirtation videos, including a library clip that gathered 40 million views. She is also the author of a book titled "Cómo conseguir a tu crush" and has made appearances on television broadcasts and fashion events. The decision by Unipublic to integrate her formats into a 21-stage Grand Tour brought creator culture into direct contact with competitive cycling routines. The resulting policy revision illustrates the friction between influencer marketing strategies and athlete boundaries during high-level competition.
