Norway holds state funeral for King Harald V as thousands gather in Oslo

A 21-gun salute sounded across Oslo at midday on Wednesday, 9 September, marking the departure of King Harald V's coffin from the Royal Palace. The cortege moved at a pace of 60 steps per minute along the one-kilometer route past the parliament building toward Oslo Cathedral. Crowds gathered along city streets that were closed to vehicular traffic and electric scooters, observing a nationwide one-minute silence as the religious service began. Bishop Olav Fykse Tveit presided over the Lutheran funeral ceremony inside the cathedral, noting the public outpouring of tributes that followed the monarch's death on 28 August at age 89.

The people's love for King Harald does not end with his passing, quite the opposite.

International dignitaries and royal family

The procession was led on foot by Harald's son and successor, King Haakon VIII, who was flanked by Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus. Princess Märtha Louise walked alongside them, while Queen Sonja and Queen Mette-Marit followed by car. Mette-Marit attended while recovering from a lung transplant undergone in June. Foreign royalty in the cortege included the Prince of Wales, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain, and the monarchs of Sweden, Denmark, and the Netherlands.

Seventeen heads of state and government joined the procession, including German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, alongside former Swiss Federal Councillor Viola Amherd. Marius Borg Høiby, Queen Mette-Marit's son from a prior relationship, attended under custodial escort in ankle restraints while serving a four-year prison sentence.

Tribute to a 35-year reign

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre addressed the congregation inside the cathedral, reflecting on Harald's 35 years on the throne. He referenced the late monarch's role in comforting the nation during tragedies, including the 22 July 2011 terrorist attacks in Oslo and Utøya. Støre commended Harald for maintaining an accessible, grounded character while fulfilling the duties of head of state.

We are deeply grateful for 35 years with King Harald as King of Norway, but above all for the way he was king. King Harald gave everything for Norway. On behalf of the Norwegian people, I say: thank you for everything.

Following his tribute to the late monarch, the prime minister turned directly to the new sovereign to state, "Long live the king." Floral wreaths inside the cathedral carried personal farewells, including a message reading "Thank you for a good life" from Queen Sonja and a single word, "Takk", from Haakon and his family.

Public mourning and burial at Akershus

The state funeral concluded a national mourning period spanning between 12 and 13 days. Prior to the ceremony, more than 46,000 mourners filed past the king's casket during a lying-in-state at the Royal Palace chapel, where wait times reached up to seven hours. On Wednesday, police and media agencies estimated that between 53,000 spectators lined the procession path and up to 180,000 gathered across central Oslo, while municipal halls and libraries across the country of 5.6 million people broadcast the service live.

After the cathedral ceremony, the royal coffin was transported to Akershus Fortress. Harald V was interred in the royal crypt at the Palace Chapel alongside his parents and grandparents during a private burial service reserved for the royal family and official delegates.
