An Atlantic weather system swept across northern and central Italy on 9 September 2026, ending the prolonged summer heatwave with severe rainstorms, hail, and high winds. Civil protection authorities declared an orange weather alert for Lombardy, Veneto, and Emilia-Romagna following overnight tempests and localized whirlwinds. In the cities of Brescia and Cremona, dawn storms unroofed residential buildings and ripped the roof off an industrial plant, leaving streets blocked by fallen trees. In the province of Vicenza, a two-year-old girl was hospitalized in serious condition following an accident linked to the severe weather in Bassano del Grappa. Municipal maintenance crews mobilized across northern towns to clear debris and assess structural damage to properties.

Railway disruptions and river surges

The severe weather caused immediate transport interruptions across Lombardy on the morning of 9 September. Fallen tree branches landed on the tracks along the Cremona-Treviglio and Cremona-Brescia lines, while technical faults struck the Cremona railway station. Regional operators cancelled multiple services, including train 10514, rerouted others, and organized replacement bus services for stranded commuters and students. In Milan, the Seveso river climbed to its warning threshold before dawn, prompting city officials to order the precautionary closure of all public parks for the entire day. Protective flood barriers were erected along the Ponte Lambro district to shield local shops from potential overflows, while in Liguria, the Entella river in Chiavari crossed its safety threshold by rising past three meters.

Atlantic front and thermal drop

The arrival of the low-pressure system brought an abrupt temperature decline of up to 8°C across the northern half of the country, ending the atmospheric heat bubble that defined the 2026 summer. Morning temperatures began near 20°C in several northern areas following localized landslides and heavy precipitation. Lorenzo Tedici, meteorologist and media director at iLMeteo.it, stated that the northern regions and Tuscany bore the brunt of the initial instability.

Today, the drop in temperatures will affect the North and Tuscany, which will see locally more than 100 mm of rain, possible hailstorms, and strong winds.

Tedici pointed out that daytime conditions across central and northern areas would shift markedly from the preceding weeks.

Maximum temperatures will drop widely below 25°C, turning the old tropical night-time minimums into the new daytime temperatures.

Weather outlook across Italy

The weather disturbance is set to track progressively across the Italian peninsula over the remainder of the week. On Thursday, 10 September, unstable conditions and irregular downpours will spread throughout central regions and the northeast, while southern Italy observes its final day of settled summer warmth. Hail risk will follow this eastward track, moving from Tuscany and the north into central Italy on Thursday before reaching southern areas on Friday. By Friday, 11 September, clear skies will return to the north as residual rain lingers over the centre and instability develops in the south. Forecasters project that temperatures across the entire Italian peninsula will remain capped below 28°C over the weekend, with values in the Po Valley and Tuscany stabilizing between 25°C and 26°C.
