Israeli air strikes kill 11 in southern Lebanon as ceasefire tensions escalate near Nabatieh

Strikes hit Kfar Remmane

Shortly after midnight on Monday, 7 September 2026, Israeli air strikes hit the southern Lebanese village of Kfar Remmane, killing at least 11 people. According to Lebanon's National News Agency, nine people, including two infants, died when an air strike destroyed a three-storey residential building in the village, which borders the city of Nabatieh. Five additional people sustained injuries in the collapse. A second strike in the same locality targeted a civilian car, killing two paramedics on board. Rescue teams searched through the concrete rubble on Monday morning, where school textbooks and household furniture lay scattered across the site. The Israeli military stated that it was reviewing reports of the incident.

Civilian displacement in Nabatieh district

Many families had returned to Kfar Remmane following a ceasefire agreement reached in June, having previously fled during cross-border fighting. Following the midnight attack, local residents abandoned the neighbourhood once again as multiple neighbouring structures sustained damage. Resident Fouad Chakaron described the conditions facing returning civilians.

Chakaron stated that the destroyed residential building housed people who had no affiliation with the armed movement. The strike on Kfar Remmane took place without prior evacuation warnings from the Israeli military, differing from an operation conducted in the neighbouring village of Deir Zahrani, located about 20 kilometres from the Israeli border. In Deir Zahrani, Israeli forces issued an Arabic-language evacuation warning on Telegram approximately 22 minutes before air strikes destroyed a designated Hezbollah facility, an incident subsequently reported by the Al-Manar television network.

Ridge capture and escalating clashes

The fatal strikes follow a series of military actions across southern Lebanon over recent days. On Thursday, 3 September, the Israeli military announced that it had seized control of the strategic Ali Taher ridge overlooking Nabatieh, asserting that Hezbollah had excavated an underground tunnel network beneath the heights. Cross-border fire continued over the weekend, with air strikes killing four people on Friday, 4 September. On Sunday, 6 September, Israeli forces conducted retaliatory raids after Hezbollah launched explosive drones toward Israeli positions. Sunday strikes killed between four and seven people and injured 20 others in southern villages.

Diplomatic strain on the June truce

The renewed hostilities have placed intense strain on the ceasefire framework negotiated in June through United States and Iranian mediation. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused Hezbollah of repeatedly breaching the accord and attempting to rearm in southern Lebanon.

Repeated drone attacks. Hezbollah continues to try to rebuild its military capabilities in southern Lebanon. These violations will not be tolerated.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun appealed directly to Washington and the international community to halt the Israeli operations, calling the latest strikes a dangerous escalation. Lebanese government figures indicate that Israeli military operations have killed 4,300 people in Lebanon since March. Israeli forces currently maintain ground control over a border strip of approximately 10 kilometres inside southern Lebanon, while additional bilateral negotiations between Lebanese and Israeli officials remain planned without a confirmed date.
