Israel threatens full-scale war on Palestinian Authority following northern West Bank stabbing

Defense directive and retaliation terms

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz announced on 7 September 2026 that military forces have received orders to prepare for full-scale war against the Palestinian Authority. The directive applies if security mechanisms or affiliated bodies initiate or prepare an offensive matching the scale of the 7 October 2023 assault. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu joined Katz in issuing the instructions, which outline military operations aimed directly at the senior leadership and operational bodies of the Authority based in Ramallah. Retaliatory measures detailed by Katz include targeted killings of high-ranking figures, permanent military deployments, and the evacuation of civilians from towns and villages where militant activities occur. The defence minister compared these prospective operations to the security zones established by Israeli forces in Gaza and southern Lebanon.

If the Palestinian Authority's security mechanisms and related bodies initiate, or we know with certainty that they are about to initiate, a terror attack in the style of October 7 against IDF forces and Jewish settlements, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and I have instructed the IDF to prepare for the opening of a full-scale war.

Northern West Bank stabbing and manhunt

The ministerial warning followed a knife attack carried out earlier on 7 September 2026 against an Israeli settler in the northern West Bank. The victim sustained injuries and was transported to a hospital by the Magen David Adom emergency service. Following the stabbing, Israeli troops launched a search operation, located the fleeing Palestinian assailant, and fatally shot him. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu subsequently reaffirmed that Israel will continue to eliminate militants, target their organizers, and dismantle infrastructure across the territory. News reports indicate no evidence linking the Palestinian Authority to the planning or execution of the stabbing incident. The rival Islamist group Hamas praised the knife attack and urged an escalation of attacks against soldiers and settlers.

Palestinian and political reactions

Palestinian officials rejected the warning, describing the rhetoric as an effort to escalate tensions ahead of Israel's parliamentary elections scheduled for late October 2026. Rawhi Fattouh, the president of the Palestinian National Council, stated that the threats reflect an unwillingness by the Israeli government to pursue peaceful negotiations. Outside East Jerusalem, approximately three million Palestinians live alongside more than 500,000 Israeli settlers throughout the West Bank. Settler violence against Palestinian residents has increased in recent months, often resulting in few or no legal repercussions.

Israel is not looking for a partner for peace, but rather a permanent source of fueling conflict and spreading chaos and instability.

Security concerns and troop deployments

Israeli military commanders reported logistical and security challenges regarding the defense of newly established settlements and outposts. The newspaper Haaretz reported that Israeli deployment in the West Bank is set to reach 26 battalions during the week of 7 September 2026. Several commanders noted that newly erected outposts frequently lack adequate security infrastructure and rely on single access roads traversing Palestinian villages, creating vulnerabilities during ambushes. Military officers expressed concern that forces are stretched thin across simultaneous operations in Gaza, Syria, and southern Lebanon, where overnight airstrikes killed 12 people, including two children. Senior military personnel also reported mounting political pressure and limited coordination with civilian police forces as tensions between settlers and Palestinians continue.
