UN warns of supersized El Niño reaching 4°C anomaly as UK urges emergency food stockpiling

The World Meteorological Organization warned on Thursday that an intense El Niño will peak in late 2026 and persist through February 2027, prompting governments to issue extreme weather advisories.

On 3 September 2026, the World Meteorological Organization reported that the El Niño climate phenomenon is firmly established in the equatorial Pacific and will strengthen into an intense event. Seasonal forecasts from WMO production centres indicate a probability close to 100% that conditions will persist through February 2027. UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the world has entered a danger zone of extreme weather, calling for urgent action to protect vulnerable communities. WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo stated that the event could be stronger than anything documented since records began 40 years ago.

Pacific temperature anomalies and atmospheric shifts

El Niño occurs every two to seven years when trade winds weaken or reverse, preventing cold water from welling up off South America and releasing immense heat into the atmosphere. Ocean surface temperatures at the centre of the phenomenon reached 2.6°C above the 30-year average on 31 August 2026, approaching the satellite-era peak anomaly of 3.1°C recorded in 2015. An average of 14 climate models projects ocean surface anomalies will reach 4°C in November 2026. Climate analyst Zeke Hausfather noted that historical documents, tree rings, and coral samples suggest no comparable event has occurred in the past 1,000 years. Any anomaly exceeding 0.5°C classifies as an El Niño event, and the added heat is projected to make 2027 the warmest year on record.

Global agricultural and ecological disruptions

The rapid ocean warming is disrupting marine ecosystems, agriculture, and weather patterns across multiple continents. In Peru, the world's primary producer of anchovies, fishing vessels in Chimbote (400 kilometres north of Lima) have remained docked for weeks because anchovy schools dived deeper to seek cooler waters. In Indonesia, prolonged dry conditions affected agriculture, leaving rice fields parched in Bogor, West Java, as of 28 August 2026. The WMO forecast for September to November 2026 indicates higher than normal temperatures across almost all land areas, alongside elevated risks of flooding across Asia.

National preparations and emergency stockpiling

Governments and humanitarian agencies are reinforcing early warning networks and deploying preventive medical assistance to protect high-risk populations. In the United Kingdom, Environment Secretary Angela Eagle advised households to keep several days of emergency food and water at home to prepare for power disruptions and heavy winter storms. Eagle noted that the UK faces wetter, stormy winters and drier summers as the phenomenon intensifies over the coming months.
