Saudi defences intercept Houthi missile over Riyadh as airport depot catches fire

Saudi-led coalition air defences intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile fired toward Riyadh at dawn on Saturday, 19 September 2026. Ground escalation across Yemen

The cross-border strikes follow weeks of intensified fighting between Houthi forces and the Saudi-backed internationally recognised government inside Yemen. Armed forces aligned with the Yemeni government reported killing 12 Houthi fighters while repelling an infiltration attempt in the al-Fuliahan sector of southern Marib on Saturday. Government military commanders also confirmed that 13 Yemeni soldiers were killed across two days of clashes in the southwestern provinces of Taiz and Lahj. Ground combat in Marib, Taiz, Lahj, al-Jawf, and al-Bayda has resulted in hundreds of deaths in September 2026, including 48 combatants killed during the 24 hours preceding Sunday morning.

Regional shipping and international reactions

Houthi forces have established control over the Yemeni coastline along the Red Sea up to the Bab-el-Mandeb strait, a chokepoint connecting Asian and European maritime trade through the Suez Canal.
