Greek farmers get diesel tax relief at the pump from 1 November via myDiesel

From 1 November 2026, eligible Greek farmers will buy agricultural diesel without paying the Special Consumption Tax up front, with the exemption applied at the fuel pump through a digital coupon in the myDiesel app.

A digital coupon replaces the refund

From 1 November 2026, eligible farmers will be able to buy agricultural diesel with the Special Consumption Tax (SCT) exempted at the pump, instead of paying it up front and claiming it back later. The system runs through myDiesel, a digital application from the Greek tax authority AADE, which is available on the myAADE portal and as the free myDieselApp for iOS and Android. Farmers log in with their TAXISnet credentials and issue a digital coupon carrying a unique code and a QR code. At the station, the operator scans the QR code or enters the coupon number, and the app automatically checks that the buyer is entitled and that the quantity is within the permitted limits. The system was presented on Thursday, 22 October 2026, at a joint press conference.

Tax relief per litre and the new ceiling

The total relief amounts to 50.84 cents per litre, made up of 41 cents of SCT and 9.84 cents of the VAT charged on that tax. On that basis, the benefit comes to €254.20 for 500 litres and €508.40 for 1,000 litres, provided the quantities are eligible. The minister also announced that the eligible ceiling will rise from 150% to 200% of the reference quantity, which depends on the crop type. In one example, a crop with planned consumption of 10 litres per stremma would see its cap rise from 15 to 20 litres per stremma. The ministry will also begin updating the diesel consumption tables for each crop immediately.

Government framing

Margaritis Schinas, the minister for rural development and food, presented the measure as a promise delivered to the farming community. He said the government had committed to the sector and had now acted on it, adding 'we said we would do it, and we have'. He framed the change as arriving while producers face higher production costs. According to him, high energy, fuel and fertiliser prices, combined with uncertainty from international developments, make a difficult environment for the primary sector. Deputy minister for National Economy and Finance Dimitris Markopoulos and AADE governor Giorgos Pitsilis took part in the presentation alongside him.

This is one of the longest-standing demands of Greek farmers. They fought for it and won.

Registration, eligibility and timing

Mandatory registration of fuel stations in myDiesel starts on 22 October 2026, and the digital movement of agricultural diesel becomes compulsory from 1 November. Stations receive the SCT refund automatically, at least every Monday and Thursday, once their sales documents are verified through the myDATA or eSend systems. Eligible are natural persons who hold a Single Aid Application (EAE) for the current or previous year and are registered in the farmers' register (MAAE) as a 'professional farmer' or a 'professional farmer as a new entrant to the agricultural sector'. The maximum annual quantity is calculated per beneficiary according to crop and livestock, and published coefficients include 29 for rice, 30 for cotton, 18 for potatoes and 13 for vineyards. For new entrants, the quantity is based on the average of annual maximum quantities across crops and livestock, using the previous year's EAE data.
