Russian drone strike kills two at Moldovan border as reciprocal attacks hit Novorossiysk

Russian strike disables Starokozache border post

An overnight Russian drone attack struck the Starokozache road border crossing on the Ukrainian-Moldovan border in the early hours of 9 September, killing two people and wounding three others. The facility is situated on Ukrainian territory at the southeastern tip of the shared frontier, approximately 70 kilometres from the port of Odesa and 130 kilometres from the Moldovan capital of Chisinau. The strike inflicted structural damage on the crossing, prompting the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine and Odesa regional governor Oleg Kiper to suspend all transit operations at the checkpoint. Ukrainian officials formally notified Moldovan authorities of the closure. Among the injured was a Moldovan national traveling by car toward Chisinau, who sustained injuries in the blast but declined hospitalisation, according to a statement released by the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Moldovan government warns of westward escalation

The fatal bombardment near the frontier prompted strong warnings from Moldova's leadership regarding the shifting geography of the war. Moldovan President Maia Sandu warned that the Russian front line is steadily advancing westward toward neighbouring states. During a cabinet meeting broadcast live on Facebook, Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan expressed deep concern over the escalating danger to Moldovan citizens residing near the border zone. Tofan pointed to a sharp rise in cross-border incidents, noting that 17 drones had fallen on Moldovan territory during August alone, an amount exceeding the total recorded across the entire previous year.

Ukraine targets Novorossiysk military port

During the same overnight hours between Tuesday and Wednesday, Ukrainian forces launched a widespread retaliatory drone operation across Russian territory. The Russian Ministry of Defence claimed that its air defence units shot down nearly 600 Ukrainian aerial drones, including 596 intercepted across several regions. The primary target of the Ukrainian strike was a military base situated in the Black Sea port city of Novorossiysk, which sustained the heaviest damage in the region. Russian regional authorities confirmed that the overnight bombardment killed at least four people and left multiple residents injured. The cross-border barrages reflect a sustained exchange of long-range strikes that have targeted energy grids, logistics hubs, and naval infrastructure across the Black Sea basin.

Diplomatic contacts resume amid heightened attacks

The deadly exchanges took place alongside renewed high-level diplomatic activity pushed by the United States to address the war, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner visited both Kyiv and Moscow over the preceding weekend to hold preliminary discussions with officials. Following those diplomatic visits, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin conducted a phone conversation on Tuesday, discussing the conflict with what the Kremlin characterised as extreme frankness. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated on Tuesday that Ukrainian, Russian, and American negotiators could convene for joint peace talks as early as September. However, Russian officials adopted a more cautious stance, stating on Monday that it remained too early to confirm concrete plans for trilateral negotiations.
