Matthew Brennan secured his fifth victory of the 2026 Vuelta a Espana on Wednesday, taking the bunch sprint at the end of the 185-kilometre flat stage from Dos Hermanas to Seville. The 21-year-old Visma-Lease a Bike rider, competing in his first three-week race, launched his final acceleration off the rear wheel of Magnus Cort Nielsen before holding off Jordi Meeus by a bike length at the line. Cort Nielsen finished third, while Meeus took second place for Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe. The triumph marked Brennan's second consecutive stage win following his success in Palos de la Frontera on Tuesday, bringing his season total to 11 victories.

Breakaway caught inside final kilometres

The 185-kilometre stage through Andalusia ran under temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius and featured an immediate escape attempt after the start in Dos Hermanas. French rider Enzo Paleni of Groupama-FDJ and Spanish rider Sinuhe Fernandez of Burgos-BH established a lead after Fredrik Dversnes dropped back to the peloton within the first three kilometres. The leading pair built an advantage exceeding five minutes around the halfway mark before peloton tempo increased. Visma rider Steven Kruijswijk spent long spells setting the chase pace alongside Cofidis, whose riders worked for Bryan Coquard. Fernandez collected the intermediate sprint points at San Jose de la Rinconada before Paleni attacked solo with 15 kilometres remaining. The peloton absorbed Fernandez with ten kilometres left and caught Paleni with under three kilometres remaining.

Brennan's fifth stage win elevated the total haul for Visma-Lease a Bike to seven wins in the 2026 race, following two earlier victories by Wout van Aert. Seven stage wins represents the highest tally the Dutch team has ever collected during a single Grand Tour. At 21 years of age, Brennan became the youngest rider to win five stages in a single Grand Tour edition. In 21st-century Vuelta history, only Alessandro Petacchi in 2003 and John Degenkolb in 2012 had previously achieved five stage victories in a single race edition. Brennan also became the first rider to take five stages in a Grand Tour since Marcel Kittel at the 2017 Tour de France.

General classification standings before time trial

The general classification contenders finished together within the main peloton, leaving the top order unchanged ahead of the final three days of racing. Enric Mas retained the red jersey for a ninth consecutive stage, maintaining a margin of 2:06 over Austrian rider Felix Gall of Decathlon CMA CGM and 2:10 over four-time Vuelta winner Primoz Roglic. The race enters a critical phase on Thursday with a 32.1-kilometre individual time trial connecting El Puerto de Santa Maria to Jerez de la Frontera. Mas noted that the time trial represents one of the most significant tests of his career as rivals seek to reduce his advantage before Madrid.
