Copernicus records August 2026 as joint-hottest month on record at 16.96C

The European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service reported that August 2026 reached an average global temperature of 16.96 degrees Celsius, matching the record set in July 2023 and sitting 1.65 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

The European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service announced on 10 September 2026 that the planet recorded an average surface air temperature of 16.96 degrees Celsius in August. The figure ties July 2023 as the warmest individual month in Copernicus records dating back to 1940. Global temperatures in August stood 1.65 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, marking the first month since November 2025 to exceed the 1.5-degree benchmark. The three-month period from June to August 2026 also matched the boreal summer record set in 2024.

Andrew Dessler, a climate scientist at Texas A&M University, pointed out that these developments match long-standing projections.

Ocean warming and El Nino

Beyond air temperatures, ocean heat reached new highs outside polar regions. Sea surface temperatures averaged 21.07 degrees Celsius across August, surpassing the previous August high of 20.98 degrees Celsius recorded in 2023 and tying the all-time monthly record set in March 2024. A daily ocean heat mark was also set on 22 August. Scientists at Copernicus attributed the combined surge to ongoing greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels and an intensifying El Nino pattern in the equatorial Pacific.

Regional extremes and economic disruption

The boreal summer brought extreme conditions to 1.3 billion people, with 52 countries recording their hottest June-to-August period. In Western Europe, temperatures averaged 2.54 degrees Celsius above the 1991–2020 baseline, exceeding the previous record set in 2003. Eleven European countries, including Spain, Italy, France, and Switzerland, registered record summer averages. The heat lowered river flows and depleted soil moisture across the continent, while wildfires occurred in Belgium and Greece, and drought hit Romania and Hungary.

Severe impacts extended well beyond Europe. In Indonesia, almost 100 million people experienced their warmest June-to-August stretch, with tropical forest fires in Borneo and Sumatra sending smoke into Malaysia and closing schools. Drought in Panama prompted authorities to restrict daily ship transits through the canal, which carries 5% of global maritime commerce.

Long-term thresholds and policy targets

While August exceeded the 1.5-degree Celsius mark for a single month, the Paris Agreement threshold is measured as a multi-decade average. The world's current long-term warming level stands at approximately 1.4 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. All eight of the warmest individual months on record have occurred since July 2023.

Simon Stiell, executive secretary of UN Climate, reiterated the need to accelerate emissions reductions.

As long as humanity continues to burn colossal amounts of coal, oil and gas, the pollution generated will continue to overheat our planet, and extreme heatwaves will continue to smash absolute records.
