Cable car collides with construction crane in Alpe d'Huez, injuring 23 people

Collision on the Pic Blanc line

A cable car cabin carrying approximately 50 passengers struck the boom of a construction crane truck in the French Alpine resort of Alpe d'Huez on Wednesday, 26 August 2026, at approximately 09:30. The collision took place on the Pic Blanc cable car route as the cabin was leaving an upper station. Source reports recorded the altitude of the station between 2,300 and 2,700 metres above sea level. The cabin impacted the articulated arm of the crane, which was stationed nearby for construction work. The force of the impact projected passengers forward and caused the cabin to tilt steeply to the side, causing passengers to lose their balance and slide across the cabin floor.

There is necessarily an error. Now the investigation will tell us where this error occurred, but it is clear that this crane should never have been raised.

Operator reaction and cabin stabilisation

Following the collision, the female cable car operator initiated a reverse manoeuvre to counter the tilt of the cabin. Cable car systems are built to remain stable during abrupt braking, but the physical collision with the heavy machinery compromised the cabin's equilibrium. By shifting the lift into reverse, the operator brought the cabin back to a horizontal, balanced position, preventing passengers from sliding further. Alpe d'Huez Mayor Jean-Yves Noyrey commended the operator's quick reaction, noting the severe distress among passengers when the cabin tilted.

They thought they were going to die, but the operator reacted well by reversing to level the cabin.

Emergency response and casualties

The collision resulted in injuries to 23 passengers. Regional authorities from the Isère prefecture classified three of the injured in absolute emergency status due to severe trauma, while 13 were listed in relative emergency status. The majority of the remaining victims suffered from concussions and acute shock. First responders deployed approximately 30 firefighters and seven mountain rescue specialists to assist the occupants. Most of the injured received medical evaluation at the local medical clinic in Huez. Five individuals, including a pregnant woman admitted for precautionary checks, were transported by emergency services to the Grenoble University Hospital. Mayor Noyrey stated that the majority of hospitalised individuals received medical clearance and were discharged by Wednesday evening.

Investigation and site operations

The Isère prefecture and municipal authorities publicly announced the incident on Thursday, 27 August 2026, after initial on-site interventions were completed. French gendarmes opened an inquiry to determine the operational failures that allowed the crane to obstruct the aerial lift path. Initial assessments indicated that the crane driver may not have paid attention to the overhead cable car schedule while operating the machinery. Fabrice Boutet, director general of resort lift operating company SATA, stated to broadcaster Ici that the crane should never have been raised into the transit corridor during operating hours.
