US deploys third aircraft carrier and 10,000 troops to Middle East as Iran tensions rise

The Pentagon is deploying the USS Theodore Roosevelt and an amphibious task force to the Middle East, adding up to 10,000 troops ahead of potential operations against Iran.

Naval deployment to the Middle East

The United States Department of Defense is deploying a third aircraft carrier strike group and an amphibious ready group to the Middle East, adding seven warships and between 9,000 and 10,000 military personnel to the theater. The aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt departed San Diego on Sunday accompanied by three destroyers, while the USS Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group departed California on Monday with three amphibious ships carrying the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit. The arriving forces are scheduled to reach the Middle East by late November. They will either reinforce or rotate with the two carrier strike groups already operating in the region, the USS George Washington and the USS George H.W. Bush.

Force posture and operational options

The deployment provides military commanders with operational flexibility as President Donald Trump considers resuming air strikes against Iran following the November midterm elections. If the USS George Washington remains in the theater alongside the incoming Theodore Roosevelt and the George H.W. Bush, the United States will operate three aircraft carriers in the Middle East simultaneously for the first time since April. Combined, three carrier strike groups comprise nearly 20,000 troops, up to 150 fighter jets, and multiple guided-missile destroyers. The United States currently maintains more than 50,000 military personnel and approximately 20 warships across the Middle East. On Thursday, the USS George Washington operated in the Arabian Sea, while the USS George H.W. Bush was located in the Indian Ocean. The Makin Island group joins the USS Boxer Amphibious Ready Group, which has been stationed in the region for months.

Stalled negotiations and maritime disputes

The troop movements follow stalled negotiations over maritime transit through the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway that normally carries roughly one-fifth of global crude oil. President Donald Trump rejected a seven-day proposal submitted by Tehran to reopen the strait in exchange for implementing terms from a June memorandum of understanding. Mediators have sought an interim compromise where Iran guarantees open commercial transit through the strait in exchange for the removal of the United States naval blockade on Iranian ports. The diplomatic impasse follows talks held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, though Iranian officials stated on Wednesday that they had received an alternative proposal from Washington. In an interview with Time magazine, Trump confirmed that increased strikes remain possible after the November midterms if negotiators fail to reach a settlement. Speaking to reporters at the White House regarding an incident involving a flydubai flight, Trump responded to questions about potential retaliatory strikes.

They will be hit very hard, don't worry.

Timeline of the confrontation

The conflict began on 28 February 2026, when the United States and Israel initiated joint strikes against Iranian targets. A temporary pause in fighting during the spring collapsed as broader peace talks failed to produce a lasting agreement. The USS George H.W. Bush deployed from Virginia in March, while the USS George Washington sailed from Japan in May and arrived in the theater in August. Both sides have continued to exchange sporadic fire across the region, though United States strikes on Iranian oil vessels have paused for nearly a month. The economic consequences of elevated fuel prices and protracted military operations remain central factors before the United States congressional midterms in November.
