SK Gas pays 5.3 million dollars at auction for priority Panama Canal transit

Record auction for canal passage

South Korean energy firm SK Gas paid 5.3 million dollars at auction to secure priority transit through the Panama Canal for its liquefied petroleum gas carrier, G. Spirit. The vessel took on its cargo at a United States terminal along the Gulf of Mexico and anchored near Cristobal at the Atlantic entrance. The 5.3 million dollar payment allows the vessel to transit on 1 September 2026, two days before planned capacity reductions take effect. This sum exceeds the previous benchmark of 4.6 million dollars set earlier in August 2026, as well as a 4 million dollar bid registered in April 2026.

The Panama Canal Authority holds three daily auctions with baseline starting prices, allowing market bidding to determine the final cost of open slots. Ilya Espino de Marotta, deputy administrator of the Panama Canal Authority, confirmed the scale of recent bids.

Water shortages force transit reductions

The 80-kilometre passage connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, handling between 3% and 5% of global maritime commerce, with trade flows primarily linking the United States and China. Operation of the canal locks depends entirely on freshwater stored in the artificial reservoirs of Gatun Lake and Alhajuela Lake. Reduced precipitation caused by the cyclical El Niño weather pattern, which recurs every two to seven years, has diminished water reserves across both lakes. In response, the Panama Canal Authority will lower daily ship transits from 36 down to 34 on 3 September 2026, and to 32 on 15 September 2026.

Approximately 90% of transits are reserved well in advance, leaving only unallocated or modified slots to be distributed through the daily auction system.

Queue dynamics and charter costs

Drying conditions and reduced throughput have prolonged waiting times at both ends of the canal. On the evening of 27 August 2026, 120 vessels were waiting to cross, comprising 104 vessels with prior bookings and 16 without reservations. Ships arriving without confirmed slots face waiting times of 5 to 11 days on the roadstead.

Daily charter rates for gas carriers stand at roughly 200,000 dollars, meaning a multiday wait can cost an operator more than 1 million dollars in idle vessel time alone. The Panama Canal Authority stated that average winning auction bids between October 2025 and February 2026 were approximately 55,000 dollars. Average auction prices have since tripled as shipping companies compete to prevent scheduling delays.

Global shipping disruptions

The bottleneck in Panama occurs alongside disruptions across other major maritime corridors. In the Middle East, the Saudi supertanker Amzan was attacked west of Yanbu as Houthi strikes expanded into the northern Red Sea, putting pressure on alternative routes used to bypass the Strait of Hormuz. At Dubai's Jebel Ali port, container volumes fell by more than 90% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, dropping the port from 10th to 32nd place in global rankings. Over the entire first half of 2026, the Dubai facility handled less than half of its container volume from the same period a year earlier.
