England defeat Czechia 2-0 as Harry Kane nears caps record and Tuchel tests tactical alternatives

Harry Kane scored his 87th international goal and Anthony Gordon headed the opener in Prague, lifting England into second place in Nations League Group A3.

Recovery in Prague and Group A3 standings

England moved into second place in Nations League Group A3 following a 2-0 victory against Czechia at the Fortuna Arena in Prague on Tuesday night. The result followed a 3-2 defeat against Spain at Wembley on Saturday. Czechia were reduced to ten players midway through the first half when Pavel Sulc received a red card. Anthony Gordon opened the scoring two minutes after the interval, and Harry Kane doubled the lead in the 69th minute. England continue their group schedule with an away fixture against Croatia on Saturday, before hosting Czechia at Wembley on Tuesday.

Kane's milestone and attacking depth

Kane's second-half goal was his 87th in 123 international appearances for England, and his ninth national team goal in 2026. The 33-year-old Bayern Munich forward is two caps away from equalling Peter Shilton's all-time England appearance record of 125 caps. Kane scored 61 goals in all club competitions last season, bringing his combined total for club and country to 73 goals. England manager Thomas Tuchel noted the difficulty of finding an eventual replacement for the captain while addressing the team's depth in attack.

You will not get another Harry Kane, first of all. We look for different options and solutions. We finished the game with Jude up front as a number nine. There will be someone else, but it will not be Harry or a copy of Harry. We will find a solution when it comes to it, but maybe not me. It might be another 10 years.

— Thomas Tuchel

With Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney excluded from the camp while playing in Saudi Arabia, England have limited experienced cover at centre forward. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has four goals in 13 caps at age 29, while 23-year-old Nottingham Forest forward Liam Delap remains the only English striker under 27 with a Champions League goal.

Bellingham's tactical role in forward line

Tuchel responded to the attacking constraints by testing Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham in advanced positions during the second half in Prague. Bellingham wore the captain's armband after replacing Kane in the closing stages, operating as a central striker after previously featuring behind him. Tuchel explained that shifting between a 4-3-3 and a 4-2-3-1 allows Bellingham and Kane to link together while maintaining positional balance across both flanks.

I like him as a nine. Then he can contribute to both sides and overload the sides and doesn't affect so much of the balance. We found a bit of a new role for him in the last match, as a central 10, so he can go to both sides and it is more of a 4-2-3-1 than a 4-3-3 to have Harry and Jude closer together and to give them a chance to overload both sides.

Impact of La Liga transfers on Gordon and Alexander-Arnold

Gordon scored for the third consecutive England match, following goals against Spain on Saturday and Argentina in the World Cup semi-final. The 25-year-old winger completed a £69.3 million transfer from Newcastle to Barcelona in late May. His header in Prague came from a cross delivered by Trent Alexander-Arnold, who made his first start under Tuchel and his first England appearance since June 2025 after missing the 2026 World Cup. Kane commended the impact of the La Liga-based duo after the final whistle.

I think sometimes going to a big club like that gives you more self-belief, more confidence. You feel like you belong on the biggest stage and I think he's taken that into his England performances.

— Harry Kane

Gordon credited his adaptation to Barcelona's possession-oriented system for developing the tactical subtlety of his game beyond raw pace and pressing. Alexander-Arnold's defensive and crossing display in the deeper right-back position solidified England's control throughout the second half.
