French court recognizes flight attendant breast cancer as occupational disease in aviation first

Flight hours and airborne hazards

Lainault worked as a flight attendant and later as a purser on long-haul routes, accumulating 12,600 flight hours over her 30-year aviation career. The court identified three cumulative hazards in her work environment: regular night work, cabin second-hand smoke, and cosmic ionizing radiation. More than 6,500 flight hours took place at night, on flights such as 14-to-15-hour trips to Santiago with four hours of onboard rest. Air France permitted passenger smoking until November 2000, exposing cabin staff to tobacco smoke during the first 11 years of her service.

Scientific research on cosmic radiation and night shifts

Long-distance polar routes expose aircraft crews to elevated cosmic and solar radiation, as atmospheric and geomagnetic shielding weakens near the poles. An August study by Harvard Medical School published in JAMA Internal Medicine examined more than 12 million American death certificates across 500 professions, finding that radiation-related cancers accounted for 6.9% of deaths among flight attendants and 6.7% among pilots. Legal battle and aviation precedents

Lainault fought for two and a half years with assistance from the CFDT union after two regional recognition committees initially rejected her claim. Because breast cancer is not listed on the standard French schedule of occupational diseases, claimants must establish causality through individual court petitions. In 2023, a French nurse who worked night shifts for 28 years secured a similar ruling. Lawyer Elisabeth Leroux confirmed that the Bayonne ruling is final with no appeal filed. Air France noted that it was not a party to the proceedings and that worker safety remains a priority. The judgment allows Lainault to take early retirement and guarantees full state coverage for ongoing healthcare. France's occupational safety agency plans to publish an extensive study on night shifts, radiation, and breast cancer in 2027.
